XP has been reinstalled twice. Registration is out of date. Cannot format. HELP ME!?
Like I said, XP has been installed twice, so upon boot-up, it ask’s me which to use, the first one wants registration, and I can’t get it online w/o networking options (to even get into my account). The second gets an error, and can’t log in. I have CDROM at the top of my priority list in BIOS. Even with the disk in, I can’t get windows xp to attempt the reinstall and give me the options for reformatting. Error comes up. I can get into Safe Mode with Command Prompt as the administrator, but “format C:” in prompt only leads to: Warning all data on non-removable disk will be lost” “yes” — “cannot run because this volume is in use by another process” “format may run if this volume is dismounted” “yes” “cannot lock the drive” “this volume is still in use”. WTF do i do to format, short of buying a new hard drive. Question 2: if I have to buy a hard drive, is mine SATA or ATA? It’s a Dell Inspirion 5100. 2.4Ghz, 256 RAM, etcetera. Please help. Thanks.
use gparted live CD to reformat the drive to raw,, u can download and burn the ISO image for this directly from the gparted homepage or use this link

can boot this image from CD or USB and use the software on the live OS to reformat any drives it finds,, it will find the drives just reformat them to raw and let windows quick format the nt file system to the raw drives once ur done
u will need to copy the ISO image and don’t try to just copy the file to disk u need to export the image to the media if using a CD to boot

make the bootable CD with that just copy the image to the CD with that software boot up and u should be able to format and boot windows,, but i suspect ur boot media is corrupt as well, and there is no fiX for that =)…
