Online dating — good or bad idea? and why?

Just recently signed up on a dating site, and not sure whether it’s a good or bad idea. Even though the guy I’m talking to looks genuine and is a single parent like me, I’m not convinced that online dating is safe and not just for losers…..well, I’m not a loser for one, but then my friends dared me to sign up and see what I would find.

Did the online dating from April 2004 until August 2004. I joined a couple of sites for 3 month stints, and one for one month. I did it to get some male “companionship” long-distance while I was trying to get over my divorce and a bad dating experience that followed the divorce. That amount of time was all I needed to have grown tired of the lying, sexual overtones, and general pat answers to questions. Even though I was only tied in to Christian sites, the guys were a bit dicey in their motivations…just that they were less obvious on the Christian sites. Yes, there were some good guys on it, but the pickings were few and far between.

And, yes, I met my hubby on-line. Right during August when I was done with the soap-opera of the on line dating game, I met my hubby. I was revisiting a site that I had quit a couple of months before (they entice you to return for a few days), and was in a chat room. My hubby saw me and chased me like crazy.

With the exception of my hubby, all of the guys who wanted to meet me in person offered to pay for ME to fly to meet THEM on THEIR turf. I didn’t like the security about that. I never took any of them up on that. My hubby did the opposite. He said that he’d come see me, but his circumstances were different because he was taking a lot of risk coming. That is because he is a paraplegic/stroke victim, and as such, is very vulnerable and easy to harm. He had been mugged several times. He decided to take a bus trip to come see me. That meant a lot: 4 bus changes, 36 straight hours to cover 1300 miles! I figured, if that guy had enough guts to risk life and limb to come see me, then he was most certainly worth my time.

His visits were 3 in all between October 2004, until he moved to Texas in July 2005. THEN we started to date…I didn’t consider on-line as dating (not really).
So, you need to meet the person in flesh -n-blood so to speak. You need to feel his touch, smell him, see how he kisses, see him when he has the whole gamut of emotions, and get to see how YOU react to HIM.

We married Valentines Day 2007. 100x better than my first marriage. I finally found love…

But remember, we beat the odds. The internet dating thing has more pitfalls than good points. Approach with great caution, and listen to that little voice in your head….it may save your life!
