How do I search for more online images using only a photo?
Nigerian scammers are using photos of male models on dating websites and on sites like myspace.com to lure women into their 419scams. Unfortunately there is no way to do a search on those images for a woman to find out if the user of those images are ligit or not. Search engines need to provide search options for images only. This will help to curtail illegal use of these professional images for crime.
These pics are not taken at random on the street. They are professional type pics with studio type backgrounds.
It’s a good idea in theory; unfortunately it’s a particularly hard problem to solve in practice.
This is because, unlike text, words and sentences, images are hard to compare to each other. If someone altered the colour slightly on an image, would that make it a different picture, or is it still the same?
Questions like that may seem obvious to a human, but computers don’t instinctively know the answers; they have to be taught by us.
There is a website, that says they can do automatic face recognition and tagging of images, which would go a long way to helping to reach the goal you described (http://www.riya.com). The ultimate goal; making sure a person is the same as the picture that they have put on the ‘net, is a lot more difficult. The scammer does not have to get a picture from the ‘net; he could scan one from a magazine, or take a picture of a random person on the street.
Herein lies the difficulty.
