How does the Techa River connect with Chelyabinsk Russia?

I have spent many days here in the State Library of QLD Australia trying to determine exactly how the plutonium contaminants of Mayak/Ozersk (depending on what year you start looking as the city changed names) was able to contaminate the people of Chelyabinsk. I have been met with alot of resistance and a lack of information (mainly pre-Russian Federation maps) . All of the online maps are useless (Google maps, Bing maps and Yahoo maps) have failed to give me a direct physical connection between the plutonium production plant at Lake Karachai and the contamination of Chelyabinsk via the Techa river. In fact, according to the maps at the Australian government’s catalogue, there is no physical connection whatsoever. (their maps however are from the USSR era, and when I pushed further, they said I need to refer to the library of Canberrra for more up to date information).
What is the realtionship between the “Techa River” & the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia?

Th radio active pollutants are emptied at Mayak into Techa river. This it self connects to river Ob.
I too find it difficult to understand.I will edit later.
