Russian Album

Russian Album

What makes Anna Netrebko more than just the next Russian soprano? Is it her as direct but not as quite so refined technique, her less restrained but much more effective interpretations, and her intensely expressive but always under control tone? Or is it her distinctively non-Russian vibrato — leaner, cleaner, and with a much tighter focus but just as much power? One has to listen to Netrebko’s Russian Album and judge for one’s self. Listen to her tenderly touching Arioso from Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, her brilliantly colorful arias from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Snow Maiden, her passionately despairing songs from Rachmaninov’s Russian years — especially her inconsolable “Oh, Do Not Sing Me Those Sad Songs” — and finally her utterly enchanting and deeply affecting “Letter Scene” from Eugene Onegin in which Tchaikovsky’s Tatyana grows from a girl into a woman right before our ears. While in the past Netrebko has delivered terrific recordings — her Violetta in La Traviata was absolutely riveting — this disc seems to cut closer to the heart of the singer and her sympathetic understanding of the style, the music, and the idiom makes the Russian Album perhaps the her best and most characteristic calling card. Deutsche Grammophon’s sound puts Netrebko center stage. Lamentably, it leaves Valery Gergiev and the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater in the pit. ~ James Leonard, Rovi Performers: Alexandr Morozov – Baritone (Vocal); Anna Netrebko – Soprano (Vocal); Chorus of the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersberg – Choir, Chorus; Dmitry Voropaev – Tenor (Vocal); Ilya Bannik – Bass (Vocal); Mariinsky (Kirov) Theater Chorus – Choir, Chorus; Zlata Bulycheva – Mezzo-Soprano (Vocal)

Russian Waltzes and Romances

Russian Waltzes and Romances

$15.18

The booklet for this disc, in Russian and English, gives a history of Russian band music dating back to medieval times but has little to say about the music actually included on the disc. The name Leningrad Military District Headquarters Band might suggest a quasi-martial brass ensemble, but in fact the group is comparable to a Western concert band, with winds and even plucked stringed instruments to accompany the “romanses,” which are vocal pieces. The composers are all unknown, and a few are anonymous, but given the predominance of waltzes on the program the music would seem to date from the late nineteenth century. There are no song texts, which is too bad — sample That Is So Boring, track 17, you’ll be overcome (unless already Russophone) with a strong desire to know what it’s all about. There are other humorous numbers, as well, and the pieces are quite distinct from one another, with a variety of approaches in terms of orchestration and structure. The vocalist, operatic baritone Nikolay Kopylov, has a fine feel for the semi-popular melodies of the songs. Not a very enlightening disc for Westerners unfamiliar with the music, but plenty enjoyable to listen to, and a promising offbeat gift for the Russophile or lover of band music. ~ James Manheim, Rovi Performers: Nikolay Kopylov – Baritone (Vocal)

Pigeon John Is Dating Your Sister

Pigeon John Is Dating Your Sister

$11.18

Run-D.M.C. had their gold chains and Adidas. Flavor Flav had his clock, Tupac had his “Thug Life” tattoo and Pigeon John has his fedora?! A rapper’s style icon can say much about his performance and this L.A. rapper wears his heart on his head. As you’d expect, Pigeon John doesn’t come out blazing on his debut album. Nor does he get particularly deep. He is the everyman, tripping over his “Highschool Reunion” and sweating over his girl problems. “Emily” is a pure emo lesson about getting a girl pregnant and feeling bad for cutting out on her, a lighter-weight version of “Sorry Miss Jackson.” It’s probably the most serious song on this collection of songs that, while not flippant, are certainly lighthearted. Even PJ’s vocal delivery makes him sound like the sort of buddy you could have long talks with over a beer. A talented yet sensitive character who shows the slightest hint of an island accent, making him sound both extra musical and extra accessible. So when he raps, “Every word I write seals my fate/Losing every single one of my friends to date,” on “Life Goes On” it’s hard to believe he’s serious. In fact, the lesson told by guest Abstract Rude pretty much certifies that the song is a fable rather than an autobiography. DJ Rhettmatic of the Beat Junkies offers up the two strongest beats on the album, with PJ himself producing a majority of the remainder. But his Average Joe stance matches his casual rhythms. John’s biggest obstacle is himself. But isn’t it that way with most of us. No wonder it’s easy to relate. ~ Joshua Glazer, Rovi Performers: Rhettmatic – Scratching; Pigeon John – Fender Rhodes, Keyboards, Guitar, Vocals; Matt Mahaffey – Strings, Drums; Midah 9 – Vocals; Mike Majett – Bass; Murs – Vocals

The Russian Piano Tradition

The Russian Piano Tradition

$15.98

When 17-year-old Ukrainian pianist Emil Gilels won the USSR’s All-Union Contest of Musicians and Performers in Moscow in 1933, the jury praised the “striking force of rhythm and sense of form in his playing, his unbending willpower, exuberant energy, emotional freshness and spontaneity.” These qualities are manifestly present in these performances from only a bit later in Gilels’ career issued here in Appian Publications & Recordings’ The Russian Piano Tradition series. Recorded in Moscow between 1935 and 1952 — the period during which Gilels went from studying at the Moscow Conservatory under pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus to winning international fame — these 14 performances show the pianist at his most recklessly virtuosic. The earliest three — the amazing Loeillet/Godowsky Gigue, the astonishing Schumann/Tausig Der Kontrabandiste, and especially the astounding Schumann Toccata — were made in 1935, and one can only gasp at the young Gilels’ impetus tempos and imperious technique. A giddy performance of Schumann’s Traumes Wirren followed in 1937 and then a breathtaking pair of Liszt performances in 1940 — the Paganini Etude No. 5 known as “La Chasse” and the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 in D flat major. The next batch come from the early ’50s — a haunting Prokofiev Sonata No. 2 in D minor from 1950, a blazing Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No. 9 in E flat major, a blinding Beethoven Sonata No. 3 in C major from 1952, and a pair of sparkling Scarlatti sonatas in C major and G major from 1955. While it’s true that Gilels sometimes lets his fingers get ahead of the music — no piece goes by without a splash of smashed notes and some climaxes are positively drenched with wrong notes — it’s also true that Gilels far more often performs with jaw-dropping dexterity — try just Schumann’s Toccata. Superlatively remastered in surprisingly clean sound by Bryan Crimp in 2007, this disc will enthrall anyone who loves great piano playing. ~ James Leonard, Rovi Performers: Emil Gilels – Piano

Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade; Russian Easter Festival Overture

Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade; Russian Easter Festival Overture

$6.38

Recorded in 1995 and previously released in Europe on EMI, this album of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Scheherazade, Op. 35, and the Russian Easter Festival Overture, Op. 36, is a satisfactory offering, though not necessarily better than many other recordings of these Romantic favorites. Performed by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under Armin Jordan, Scheherazade is always clear and clean, excitingly up-tempo, rhythmically vital, and sometimes technically brilliant, notably in Robert Zimansky’s fluid violin part; and the Overture is warmly played, particularly by the resonant strings, and with heightened color in the various first-chair solos. Yet to appreciate the generally fine playing, one must turn the volume up fairly high to compensate for the low levels of the recording, and even then, there is a slightly airless quality to the reproduction that will be annoying to anyone seeking a realistic orchestral sound. Bearing in mind its affordability, as well as the unavoidable variability of EMI’s recording quality in the 1990s, one shouldn’t expect miracles with this reissue; and the minimal liner notes give little background information, either for the compositions or the performances. Yet this CD is a decent choice for the budget conscious and a respectable addition for any budding classical collection. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi Performers: Robert Zimansky – Violin
