How to Write a Great Cover Letter and Resume For a New Job

Resumes and cover letters are both important tools when searching for a new job.  Both documents are written representations of you before you are able to represent yourself in person.  When well written, they can open doors of communication, land you an interview and possibly a new job.  There are key components to a resume and a cover letter.  There is information you must include and information best left out of each document.  While you want to identify certain strengths, there are some that may be inappropriate to forward to a hiring manager or recruiter.  Grammar, spelling, flow and sentence structure are all important parts of a resume.  Resumes come in different forms and formats.  Decide on the best one for your particular history and information.

Great resume components will include most of the following:

  • Contact information – your name, address, phone number and email address
  • An objective – stating your purpose, what you have to offer and what you are seeking
  • A Summary or professional strengths – Identify you relevant qualities and expertise
  • Professional experience – list your work history, present and former companies for which you worked, position titles, dates of employment, location of positions, your responsibilities and accomplishments
  • Education – noting your degrees, major, minor, colleges or universities, locations, certifications, and special training
  • Affiliations – identify any organization, group or association to which you belong
  • Skills and languages – itemize you software and hardware skills and any languages in which you are fluent

Great cover letter formats includes three short paragraphs:

  • An introduction stating the purpose of your submission, the position you are interested in, the location of the position and how you discovered the vacancy.
  • Specify why the company and position appeals to you, how you can make positive contributions to their team, what skills you bring to the table, how your qualifications meet their requirements and why you are the ideal candidate for the position.
  • Extend your gratitude for the review of your resume, encourage an interview and invite the recruiter to contact you or specify a time period in which you will call or email to follow up on your submission.

In search of more resume writing techniques and cover letter help?  To get more detailed information, resume templates, sample cover letters and more job search information, go online and read posts in career forums.  They is a wealth of information, offering critiques, advice and many times an opportunity to vent to people who understand your struggle.  There are several other job and career resources online and offline that will guide your efforts.  Having a great cover letter and resume are essential tools to a successful job search.  Be sure to double check both before forwarding to a prospective employer.

On a final note, don’t be discouraged if you think your cover letter and resume are not up to par.  Get a second opinion.  Ask family or friends to give you feedback.  This will be especially beneficial if you know someone who has a knack for writing, a good command of the English language and an eye for mistakes.  Help is out there and you will find it when you look for it.  Good luck!

Excerpts from an Online Dating Service

Excerpts from an Online Dating Service

$19.18

How many jazz records do you know of that should come with a parental warning sticker? For his debut release, 23-year-old composer Nicholas Urie has assembled a big and talented ensemble to perform his settings of texts lifted from casual online dating services. These lyrics — and some definitely have rhyme, rhythm, and literary invention — range from desperate to creepy, obvious to double entendre, and cover a couple of surprising fetishes (“Does anybody want/To pretend that they’re/A robot?” — “Interlude #2″). Beyond the unusual topic and crude lyrics — approached straightforwardly and non-judgmentally, as mere artifacts of a facet of modern society — stands Urie’s songwriting. And that’s where the real surprise lies: this youngster has a cunning sense for warped brass band music. Pieces like “Wayne” “Cougar Seeks Prey,” and “Bad Girl” pull from all the strengths of the 17-piece band (18 with the inclusion of special guest Chris Speed on the last two tracks), throwing in the kitchen sink, for a wild ride through fast-paced heads, cluttered yet thrilling arrangements, and moments of yearning beauty. Christine Correa could probably make any graffiti sound like a love letter; her voice plays a key role in imparting credibility to the whole artistic approach behind this album. The seasoned rhythm section of Frank Carlberg (piano), Joe Martin (bass), and Michael Calabrese (drums) play a similar role on the instrumental front. Between the two are 13 horn players, Bill McHenry, and John Carlson getting the higher-profile solos. For a debut, Excerpts from an Online Dating Service is pretty amazing. The only weak points are found early into the album: “About Me” is a bit too circus-like to serve its purpose, and the “Overture,” an instrumental collage of themes from the album’s pieces, is downright tacky. However, the rest of this is gold. ~ François Couture, Rovi

The Juliet Letters

The Juliet Letters

$14.38

The Juliet Letters of 1992, recorded with the Brodsky Quartet, marked Elvis Costello’s first foray in the direction of classical music. But, as pianist David Murray notes here, Costello said that “this is no more my stab at ‘classical music’ than it is the Brodsky Quartet’s first rock and roll album.” The inspiration behind the songs (there are 17, plus three instrumental interludes) was a curious phenomenon that crossed Costello’s field of vision: European teenagers apparently write letters addressed to Juliet Capulet, of Romeo and Juliet, at a house in Verona touted as her residence. Costello created his own “letters,” using the whole notion as a slightly distanced platform from which to survey the nature of young love in an era marked by a good deal of narcissism. There is a good deal of humor — and even an outright laugher in This Offer Is Unrepeatable (some junk mail made it into the mix) — but the tone of the whole is probing. Musically Costello delved into harmonies that wouldn’t have fit comfortably into his pop songs, but the style, unlike that of Costello’s later ballet score Il sogno, was not an unfamiliar one to the singer’s pop fans. Canadian soprano Kerry-Anne Kutz recorded Costello’s songs in their original form with the Abysse Quartet (they are, variously, from male, female, and indeterminate perspectives), but this version by soprano Michelle Murray and her husband David Murray, is something else again. More than just an arrangement, it is a recomposition of the work for voice and piano. David Murray adds preludes, postludes, and interludes, arguing that the “understated, almost minimalistic part writing” of the string quartet original is unsuited to piano accompaniment. This contention would come as a surprise to Schubert, many of whose best songs have very minimal accompaniments, but Murray forges ahead and alters the harmonic language of the original as well. Quoting Charles Ives to the effect that tonality should be neither required nor forbidden but instead used as appropriate, he uses the melodic lines of the original songs as bases for new accompaniments that range from limpid to fairly dissonant. The piano is quite active, and sometimes seems to compete with Costello’s lyrics and thus blunt their sharp edges. Sample Dear Sweet Filthy World (track 11) on this recording and on those by Costello or Kutz, and you may find that the portrait emerges more clearly in simpler music. Against this, however, is the strong connection between the married performers here; Michelle Murray enters fully into the concept of each song. And the lack of printed texts is no problem (except perhaps for non-Anglophones), for her articulation of the words is just about flawless. The listener may wish that Costello’s songs would be left alone long enough to develop into classics, but this version, which has the effect of pushing them in a more conventionally “classical” direction, may well interest singers looking for unusual contemporary reperto

In case anyone has forgotten how ingratiating and prolific Joe Sample the songwriter has been, the master of elegant funk re-records 14 songs here. And it is a cooler, more reflective light in which Sample and producer George Duke see his old tunes in the ’90s: with relaxed, uncomplicated, to-the-point acoustic piano leads; a mildly percolating beat; and a veneer-thin garnish of electronics. It is both safe and risky to revisit the past — safe because one is surrounded by comfortable material and risky because artists seldom recapture all of the old spark. Alas, more often than not, the latter applies to Sample’s attempt to go home again, though the good tunes remain good tunes. Some of the songs go back to the Crusaders; “Free as the Wind” especially lacks the energy of the original, but “Put It Where You Want It,” thanks in part to Sample’s use of a funky old Wurlitzer electric piano, has a nice groove. Finally, just for fun, Sample slips in a jaunty solo benediction courtesy of Jelly Roll Morton, “Shreveport Stomp.” ~ Richard S. Back in 2002, Butch Walker made a record for Arista that placed him somewhere between ’80s solo troubadours like Rick Springfield and the distortion crackle of fin de siècle alterna-rock. Walker’s a talented songwriter, so he largely pulled it off. Still, it did seem kinda forced, and the thing quickly disappeared. Walker’s resurfaced in 2004 on Sony, and this time around things are much more comfy. From its handwritten liners to the obvious care with which its tracks were assembled in the studio, Letters feels like a direct communication from Butch’s big Rundgren and Cheap Trick-lovin’ brain. Like Pete Yorn, he draws ably on the mustache rock of his youth to make this music stand out in the present — check the clever lyrics and subtle synth processing of “Mixtape” to hear what ’70s pop sounds like in a 21st century light. “#1 Summer Jam”‘s cheeky power pop has a definite (and welcome) ELO quality, and “Don’t Move” figures out how to cross Radiohead with creepy old 10cc. He fits in some ballads (“Best Thing You Never Had”), exuberantly cynical rockers (the anti-L.A. rant “Lights Out”), and gorgeous, vibe-toned dusk pop — is that the ghost of a young Jackson Browne floating through “So at Last”? There’s no theft here. Rather, Walker sounds like a music fan given a golden opportunity to make a private gatefold masterpiece. Sure, “Mixtape” and “Summer Jam” can and should be hits. But it’s likely true that Walker doesn’t care if they are. Letters’ ending proves this. “Promise” is a syrupy, achy, even funny little love song done up in drippy reverb and plaintive acoustic strum, while “Thank You Note” is just Butch and a piano and a strikingly personal tribute to a fallen friend. These quieter songs ground the album’s more colorful moments; they help create the cycle that’s so often missing from records these days. Walker’s made an album for all the mornings after. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
