If Nietzsche said that a total rejection of Christian theism requires the total rejection of all values that..?
..stem from it – “the revaluing of all values” – could atheists kindly up-date us on just how far this revaluation has gone, to date?
Can you point us to any detailed papers or books that show what the replacement values are, and the reasons for them? Please note, this is not any kind of attack on atheists as having no morals or values! We know lots of you have splendid standards and are very kind people. I just want to know the intellectual basis for values that are not based on the Christian God’s values. There must be intellectual studies on this, surely? Web links would be appreciated. Thanks.
I never said Nietzsche was an atheist.
Do the answers from atheists so far indicate that they have not TOTALLY rejected Christian values then?
Also, Christian values are based upon Judaic ones in the Old Testament – that ought to be taken as understood. Thanks for that good web-link given – it helps answer my question. Any more web-links?
It doesn’t look like you’re getting much by way of pointers as to what you’re actually looking for.
i don’t know of any, either.
i’ve noticed that excessive (dominating) egotism, often of an arrogant variety — tends to go with those who are advocates of Neitzsche’s philosophy. Adolph Hitler (& Mussolini, too, it seems), thought highly of it — embracing the “superman” philosophy. So the extent of “the revaluing of all values” that had happened up to about 1945 seemed to be fascist *brutality*.
But Neitzsche, himself, probably would’ve found the direction it went — thru the Fascists, to be repulsive (he seemed to *hate* everything Germany stood for, at times! — & *loathed* the Germans as much as he did Christianity!).
The *best* of Neitzsche’s books (*if* it was actually written by him) was (to my values) “My Sister and I” — wherein he did some end-of-life re-evaluating of his *own* philosophy! It won’t answer the Question you’re posing — but *is* an interesting (and at times *touching*) read. *If* he wrote it, i’d say that Nietzsche “redeemed” himself (to some extent) therein.
One biography of his sister’s life (i forget the title — read too many years ago) was also fascinating.
i don’t know of anyone who’s done a “revaluing of all values”. Perhaps Walter Kauffman, the translator of so much by Neitzsche did that, to some measure, in his *own* philosophy? If i were interested in this subject, that’s where i’d look first. & if he doesn’t do so, himself, he *may* have some pointers as to people who *were* working on that.
Otherwise i’d point you to the Humanist Manifestos — accessible thru the External Links in the Wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanist_Manifesto
~~which *may* have some extent of “the revaluing of all values” taking place in them. You’ll have to discern, yourself, how much of that content could be considered “Christian values” & how much a “revaluing”. (Certainly local Christians of the more fundamentalist excessiveness, have *attacked* the Humanist Manifestos — just as they do the “New Age”. But if one separates Christian *theological* beliefs from their basic *ethical* values — i think atheists, agnostics, humanists, New Agers share, in largest part, the same ethical values that Christians advocate.)
