Do you have any blind date horror stories?

Or any online dating horror stories? I’m going on a blind date tonight, I showed him my pictures, yet I’m still to see his. He said that he’s not very photogenic. Should I be alarmed?
LMAOOOOOOOOO im dyin ova here..lolz

I went out with a blind chick. I got all dressed up, she didn’t even notice. We went to an art museum, bad choice. She kept knocking stuff over and complaining that she didn’t like art. I told her you just have to feel it, so she tried to touch the paintings and we got kicked out. So I led her to someone else’s car and and said I have to open the door from the inside. I went to my car, a few spaces away, and left her there. She embarrased the hell out of me.

This paranoia-fueled thriller, more intelligent and imaginative than you would have reason to believe, owes a huge debt to The Stepford Wives with its premise of a goody-good high school clique programmed by an evil doctor to be wholesome, academically driven, and shining examples of clean living. Unlike its predecessor, though, David Nutter’s film opts to open up its premise for everyone to see, …

Excerpts from an Online Dating Service

Excerpts from an Online Dating Service

How many jazz records do you know of that should come with a parental warning sticker? For his debut release, 23-year-old composer Nicholas Urie has assembled a big and talented ensemble to perform his settings of texts lifted from casual online dating services. These lyrics — and some definitely have rhyme, rhythm, and literary invention — range from desperate to creepy, obvious to double entendre, and cover a couple of surprising fetishes (“Does anybody want/To pretend that they’re/A robot?” — “Interlude #2″). Beyond the unusual topic and crude lyrics — approached straightforwardly and non-judgmentally, as mere artifacts of a facet of modern society — stands Urie’s songwriting. And that’s where the real surprise lies: this youngster has a cunning sense for warped brass band music. Pieces like “Wayne” “Cougar Seeks Prey,” and “Bad Girl” pull from all the strengths of the 17-piece band (18 with the inclusion of special guest Chris Speed on the last two tracks), throwing in the kitchen sink, for a wild ride through fast-paced heads, cluttered yet thrilling arrangements, and moments of yearning beauty. Christine Correa could probably make any graffiti sound like a love letter; her voice plays a key role in imparting credibility to the whole artistic approach behind this album. The seasoned rhythm section of Frank Carlberg (piano), Joe Martin (bass), and Michael Calabrese (drums) play a similar role on the instrumental front. Between the two are 13 horn players, Bill McHenry, and John Carlson getting the higher-profile solos. For a debut, Excerpts from an Online Dating Service is pretty amazing. The only weak points are found early into the album: “About Me” is a bit too circus-like to serve its purpose, and the “Overture,” an instrumental collage of themes from the album’s pieces, is downright tacky. However, the rest of this is gold. ~ François Couture, Rovi

The Horrors [EP]

The Horrors [EP]

A lot of the Horrors’ appeal and the almost viral spread of their popularity in the U.K. is due to their visual flair. Their look is a hybrid of big-haired, black-on-black goth, punk, and mod that could very well be the missing link between the Addams Family and emo. Likewise, the video for their single “Sheena Is a Parasite” — which was the first clip video auteur Chris Cunningham directed in years — further honed their equally stylish, scary, and witty image. Even without the eye candy, their music holds up well; this self-titled EP, which collects the songs from their U.K. singles from spring and summer 2006, is a very entertaining snapshot of their high-style horror-punk. Based on these five songs, the Horrors know the roots of their look and sound backward and forward, which is why their riff on it manages to be pretty convincing. And, just as their image mixes and modernizes different eras, their sound incorporates shockabilly, ’60s garage rock, ’50s and ’60s novelty, and slightly more straightforward punk like the Stranglers and the Damned. Faris Badwan is a potentially great punk vocalist; he rasps and snarls, but somehow you can make out all (or at least most) of what he’s screaming about. Meanwhile, Spider Webb’s Vox Continental organ squeals like it’s being tortured. The Horrors features two loving covers of songs by quintessential British eccentrics: an increasingly violent version of “Crawdaddy Simone,” which was originally done by the ’60s freakbeat weirdos the Syndicats and produced by visionary sound-shaper Joe Meek, and “Jack the Ripper,” a tribute to London’s infamous serial killer by early shock rocker Screaming Lord Sutch (who also benefited from Meek’s spooky production skills). The band’s original songs show that they’re on their way to becoming as creepy and catchy as their influences. “Death at the Chapel” is a rave-up that would sound equally revved up in the ’60s or the 2000s, but the Horrors are at the peak of their powers on “Sheena Is a Parasite,” which switches between tightly wound verses and shambolic blasts of organ and guitar, all pinned down by Coffin Joe’s rapid-fire drums. The Horrors’ arty, borderline campy music probably sounds best in small doses, and considering that their shows often last less than 20 minutes, EPs like this one just might be the best way to experience them on record. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: Joshua Von Grimm – Fender Jaguar; Faris Badwan – Vocals

Horrors of Hell

Horrors of Hell

Although they’ve often languished in the shadow of more famous satanically inspired death metal bands like Morbid Angel and Deicide, Vital Remains have gradually managed to carve out a healthy underground career for themselves, despite their rather isolated home base in Providence, RI. And it’s into the dark, uncharted bowels of that state’s rinky-dink studios (most frequently the curiously named Atonal Studios — oh, the irony!) circa 1989-1991 that 2006′s Horrors of Hell transports willing listeners, by collecting 13 tracks from three separate demos laying the foundation of the Vital Remains story. Both sides of 1991′s horrendously produced (but doubly influential to tape traders because of it) Black Mass single initiate this blasphemous ritual with the descriptively macabre tandem of “Of Pure Unholyness” and “Frozen Terror” — both reminiscent of early, Morbid Visions-era Sepultura and, of course, Morbid Angel. By comparison, the five ensuing recordings from the previous year’s Excruciating Pain demo almost sound overly produced. As evidenced by the likes of “Human Sacrifice” and “Nocturnal Blasphemy,” they are also distinctly thrashier and slightly more melodic in general approach — not unlike Dark Angel, Sadus, and Slayer, whose elemental teachings are blatantly splattered all over “Fallen Angels” (listen to the Lombardo-esque hi-hat and freakish Hanneman/King-styled solo runs). Finally, there’s 1989′s Reduced to Ashes — Vital Remains’ first-ever demo, and arguably the most interesting six tracks of the bunch in light of the extreme metal-collecting community’s Bizarro World, less-is-more aesthetic. Here, quality sound and advanced musicianship count for little in the face of improbably primal, incomparably evil, black-tinged death metal akin to San Francisco’s Possessed (see Vital Remains’ outrageous namesake tune), Brazil’s Sarcofago and Vulcano (“Smoldering Death,” “Reduced to Ashes,” etc.), and, in the case of the amusingly zombie-themed “More Brains,” proto-death gore merchants Necrophagia. In sum: many forms of primitive metallic violence collide within Horrors of Hell, which will offer countless hours of Satan-worshipping fun for serious Vital Remains fans, but maybe not the casual death metal fan just looking for a taste of the band. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi Performers: Christian Lionel Dupont – Drums; Jeff Gruslin – Vocals; Tony Lazaro – Vocals (Background), Guitar
